The Role of the Safety Representative: More Important Than Ever

Many people still misunderstand the role of the Safety Representative in the workplace.

A common misconception is that the Safety Representative acts as the company's Safety Officer or Safety Advisor. In reality, their primary role is to represent employees on matters relating to health and safety and to help ensure concerns, observations and suggestions from the workforce are effectively communicated to management.

A well-supported Safety Representative plays a vital role in promoting positive safety culture, improving consultation, and helping organisations identify and address risks before incidents occur.

Over the past month, Safety Solutions Group has delivered Safety Representative training to multiple Local Authorities, including full programmes for two separate Local Authorities and refresher training for another.

For those operating in construction, it is also important to remember that where more than 20 persons are employed on a construction site at any one time, the PSCS has a duty to facilitate the selection of a Safety Representative.
